Prayers and Confession Guide

Prayers

O most merciful God! Prostrate at your feet, I implore your forgiveness. I sincerely desire to leave all my evil ways and to confess my sins with all sincerity to you and to your priest. I am a sinner, have mercy on me, O Lord. Give me a lively faith and a firm hope in the Passion of my Redeemer. Give me, for your mercy's sake a sorrow for having offended so good a God.

Mary, my mother, refuge of sinners, pray for me that I may make a good confession. Amen.

Lord God, in your goodness have mercy on me: I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. Create in me a clean heart and renew within me an upright spirit. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In His name, my God, have mercy. Amen.

God the father of mercies through the death and resurrection of his Son as reconciled the world to himself and the sent the Holy Spirit among us for the forgiveness of sins. Through the ministry of the Church may God give you pardon and peace and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Dear Lord, help me to remove from my mind every thought or opinion which You would not sanction, every feeling form my heart which You would not approve. Grant that I may spend the hours of the day gladly working with You according to Your will. Help me just for today and be with me in it.

In the long hours of work, that I may not grow weary or slack in serving You. In conversations, that they may not be to me occasions of uncharitableness. In the day's worries and disappointments, that I may be patient with myself and with those around me. In moments of fatigue and illness, that I may be mindful of others rather than of myself.

In temptations, that I may be generous and loyal, so that when the day is over I may lay it at Your feet, with its successes which are all Yours, and its failures which are all my own, and feel that life is real and peaceful, and blessed when spent with You as the Guest of my soul. Amen.

O Lord, I am sorry that anger rises so often in my heart. Many times I feel disappointed in myself, yet even worse I offend You. Without Your help I will never win this battle with rage. But Your word says that "I have the strength for everything through Christ who empowers me."

Help me to pray, to look to You, to take a step back and calm down. I repent of holding on to anger and giving the devil a foothold in my life and relationships. I am determined to follow Your Word, until You have renewed my mind, giving me the mind of Christ - a mind at peace with God, with myself, and with others.

Shape my being into earnest kindness, a reflection of Your perfection. Grant me the grace of self-control, that I may not display unjust anger. In times when I feel anger surging again, please remind me of these things.

In the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Confession Guide

How to use this app to examine your conscience:

How to Go to Confession: A Step by Step Guide

  1. Enter the confessional and greet the priest.

The priest represents Christ and the Church. Begin by making the sign of the cross and say the first line on the list: “Forgive me, Father ... since my last confession.”
  2. List your sins.

Read through the list of sins that you created from above. Try to be thorough, but it's OK if you don't remember every single sin. It may be more of a conversation, as the priest may ask questions or comment. It doesn't have to be a non-stop laundry list of sins. When you're done, conclude with the last line on the list: “I am sorry for these and any sins I may be forgetting.”
  3. Listen to the priest.

When you're done confessing your sins, the priest may offer some guidance and suggest ways to avoid sins in the future. He'll then give you a penance, which could be a form of prayer or some work of mercy, for our healing and the healing of those we have hurt by our sins.
  4. Pray the Act of Contrition.

This can be recited from a written prayer, or made with your own words. Keep in mind, this is the most important part of a confession. There can be no forgiveness of sin if we truly do not feel sorry nor have a firm resolve not to repeat our sin.
  5. Receive absolution from God, via the priest.

The priest will then say the Absolution Prayer. Make the sign of the cross and close with Amen.
  6. Depart and fulfill your act of penance.
